Our Wines / 2007 Praxis Lagrein
During a trip to the Italian Alps, Bill became fascinated by this wine that he did not know. We first tried Lagrein while on a hunt to see the remains of Utzi, the Alpine Ice Man and oldest natural mummy. (Susan was an archaeologist in her younger days). Pronounced Lah-GRAYHN or Lah-GRINE, this cool climate red varietal is a 300 year-old cross between Teroldego and Pinot Noir. The Alto Adige is also the original home for Gewurztraminer. In the spirit of Praxis where Bill gets to play a little with winemaking, we decided to make our own and found a vineyard of California Lagrein on the Central Coast. The wine is deep red with dark purple hues and has the body of a Merlot. There are roses and violets on the nose, while flavors of rich, ripe cherries and blueberries are accented by nuances of vanilla and chocolate. Medium-bodied with a silky mouth feel, the wine is ready to drink now.
